Background: THE TROCADERO GARDENS, PARIS, PROVIDED JUST THE RIGHT SETTING RECENTLY WHEN JACQUES HEIM SHOWED HIS COLLECTION OF FASHIONS FOR THE COMING AUTUMN AND WINTER. HIS LARGE COLLECTION PAID TRIBUTE TO CURRENT TRENDS BY MEANS OF A DIAGONAL OR SPIRAL WRAP ON COATS AND DRESSES SWINGING FROM THE RIGHT SHOULDER ACROSS THE BODY, TO SWIRL ROUND BELOW THE LEFT HIP.

BALANCING THIS, AGAIN ON COATS OR DRESSES, SKIRTS FLARED FROM A LINE MIDWAY BETWEEN HIP AND KNEE. DRESSES WERE CLOSELY MOULDED ABOVE, BUT JACKETS OF SUITS WERE SHORT AND STRAIGHTER.

WHEN THIS OBLIQUE OR SPIRAL LINE IS NOT ACTUALLY DEMONSTRATED BY A SWEEP OF THE FABRIC ITSELF, IT IS INDICATED BY SEAMS AND INSETS FROM UNDER THE BUST AT ONE SIDE SWEEPING TO JUST ABOVE THE KNEE OR RIGHT ROUND ON THE OTHER. A NUMBER OF COATS AND REDINGOTES TREATED IN THIS MANNER WERE WELL LIKED.

BIG TWO-TONE CHECKS USING BLACK WITH RED, WHITE, GREY OR BROWN, WERE A SPECIAL FEATURE AS WERE MINK, SEAL AND BEAVER LININGS FOR COATS AND JACKETS. MANY OF THE HATS FOR THIS COLLECTION, DESIGNED BY SVEND, HAD LARGE UPTURNED BRIMS SWEPT BACKWARDS; BUT TO CARRY THEM PROPERLY ONE NEEDS A LONG NECK AND CONSIDERABLE ASSURANCE.

TO SUM UP, THE WINTER COLLECTIONS AS A WHOLE HAVE BROUGHT BACK CLOTHES WHICH FIT AND FLATTER A WOMAN'S NATURAL CURVES, OUTDATING THE PERIOD OF EASY, RELAXED FASHIONS AND INTRODUCING A NEW FIGURE SHAPED BY FIRM CORSETRY. THE SLOPING SHOULDER LINE, COMBINED WITH WIDE, FLARING HEMS, GIVES THE NEW SILHOUETTE A CONICAL LOOK WHICH HAS SEEN VARIOUSLY COMPARED TO CHAMPAGNE BOTTLES, DECANTERS, SPIRALS OR TRIANGLES.
