  • Description

Villanova University clipped more than a second off the world indoor distance medley relay record in Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday night (7 February). The record breaking run came at the start of the sixteenth annual Mason-Dixon Games.

The team was anchored by Irishman, Eamonn Coghlan's 4:01.8 mile and its finishing time was 9:38.4, compared with the previous record of 9:39.8 which was set in Pittsburgh in 1971.

Coghlan had to fight off Byron Dyce of the Florida Track Club in the final hundred yards to win the event and he had been given the lead by team-mates Mark Belger, Glann Bogue and Phil Cane earlier in the race.

The Florida team also bettered the previous world record with their time of 9:39.3.

In the women's 70-yard low hurdle race, Deby Laplante of Belliville, Michigan, equalled a World indoor best time of 8.8 seconds for the seldom-run race.

Laplante edged Rhonda Brady of Gary, Indiana, to tie the record set in Louisville six years ago.

Charles Foster of Chapel Hill won relatively easily in the men's 70-yard high hurdles race in 8.2 seconds, well off the indoor record of 7.8. Stan Druckery of Chicago finished two-tenths of a second behind the winner to take second place.
