  • Description

THE PEOPLE OF RHODESIA YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) COMMEMORATED REMEMBRANCE DAY - IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF RHODESIA WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN WAR.

THE MAIN CEREMONY WAS HELD AT THE CENOTAPH IN SALISBURY, AND WAS ATTENDED BY SEVERAL MEMBERS OF THE BREAKAWAY GOVERNMENT, INCLUDING THE REBEL MINISTER FOR LAW AND ORDER, MR DESMOND LARDNER-BURKE, AND MEMBERS OF THE RHODESIAN ARMED FORCES.

THERE WAS NO BRITISH REPRESENTATIVE AT THE SALISBURY SERVICE, AND FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MANY YEARS THERE WAS NO OFFICIAL RHODESIAN REPRESENTATIVE AT THE REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE IN LONDON.

THE GOVERNOR OF RHODESIA, SIR HUMPHREY GIBBS, WHO HAS REFUSED TO RESIGN HIS POST, ATTENDED A REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE AT SALISBURY CATHEDRAL - HIS FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE SINCE THE UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. AT THE SERVICE THE BISHOP OF MASHONALAND, DOCTOR ALDERSON, SPOKE OUT AGAINST THE DECLARATION AND SAID CHRISTIANS WERE NOT MORALLY OBLIGED TO OBEY THE REBEL GOVERNMENT.
