Background: U.S. Globemasters, filmed November 14, at the Rhein Main Airbase, biggest base in Germany, assume sudden significance following recent East-West exchanges on the division of Berlin.
Following a call by Soviet Premier Khruschev for an end to the four power division of Berlin, Washington replied with a "we are most solemnly committed to hold West Berlin" statement.
The U.S. State Department said, November 10: "The United States has always maintained to the position that in the four Powers are in Berlin as a result of the total surrender of the Nazi regime."
The Soviet hold-up of an American Army convoy for eight hours on November 14, at Babelsberg, outside Berlin, in East German territory, came as tension between the two camps mounted. A similar incident started the Berlin blockade ten years ago.
The Soviet action came within several days of the November 16 East German General Elections.
British Ambassador to West Germany, Sir Christopher Steel, is to fly to Berlin for first-hand information.
