In Tunis, Nov 1, the sixth anniversary of the outbreak of the Algerian war was marked by a demonstration organised by the Tunisian Students' Union, and by a meeting of Government and other representatives, attended by M. Ferhat Abbas, head of the "Algerian Provisional Government".

Referring to an earlier statement by the leader of his host country, M. Ferhat Abbas said: "We hailed with joy the proposal of Tunisian President Bourguiba when he advocated the union of Algeria and Tunisia. This union of the Greater Maghreb (Arab North Africa) can be achieve and will be the best way of obtaining the independence of all."
    M. Abbas appealed to his "Tunisian brothers" for aid in a war "Which can still last a long time." He added: "This Algerian war is above all a war of independence against colonialism. In spite of six years of war, French colonialism still has not understood, and the Algerian people are undergoing an atrocious struggle behind barbed wire."
Rallies in support of the Algerian FLN rebels were also held in Cairo, Casablanca and Peking. President Nkrumah of Ghana sent a message to M. Abbas, saying that his country would "continue to stand by you for the future liberation of Algeria."
