    President Albert-Bernard Bongo of the Gabonese Republic, Thursday (16 November), signed documents authorising the start of two important projects which will greatly improve communications in Gabon.

    The first is worth over two-thousand million francs CFA (about 3,250,000 pounds sterling), and involves two major bridges across the Ogooue River at Lambarene. The second project - for which the total cost has not been announced - involves eight smaller bridge at various palaces in the interior. The contract for the works was signed by president Bongo and the Director General of the Netherlands firm, Van Splunder.

    Work on the Lambarene bridges will begin next month. At present two farrles carry passengers and vehicles, making transport of goods to liberaville a slow and difficult process.

    It was later a???ced that the Netherlands Government has lon??? the Gabonese Republic 560 million france CFA (930,000 pounds sterling) for the construction works.
