  • Description

United States Marines are advancing further north than they ever have before in South Viet Nam to establish positions in order to help build the electronic barrier between the Viet Nams suggested by U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. US paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division have been sent to Tam Ky, the scene of recent bloody battles, 120 miles south of the Demilitarized Zone, to relieve the northward-moving marines.

Six thousand US troops have been committed to the campaign to central the northernmost provinces of South Viet Nam. Before the paratroopers arrived at Tam Ky the marines could not hold their positions there because they had to reinforce beleagured US positions along the Demilitarized Zone. The 101st airborne troops do not think they will stay on this high ground at Tam Ky too much longer. They hope that two other brigades will arrive soon because they all soon may be needed further north to help build the electronic McNamara barrier.
