  • Description

In South Vietnam an estimated one million people have been uprooted from their homes in the last three weeks as communist forces continue to apply pressure to government troops who have abandoned large areas of the country.

Along almost the whole length of South Vietnam roads are clogged with refugee columns. Communist fire constantly harasses them and communist troops have cut roads and isolated groups of troops and civilians making their way to safe government controlled areas.

One such group -- estimated to be the largest refugee column in the country -- is making its way down from the central highlands to the coastal city of Tuy Hoa. It has been held up by broken bridge and has constantly come under communist mortar fire.

Helicopters fly around the column firing back at the communists. The crews have also been throwing bread loaves to the refugees as their machines make low sweeps above the roadway.

On the coastal lowlands refugee camps are already crowded and most are overflowing as more and more displaced people brave the fire and make their way to the comparatively safe areas.

Meanwhile on Tuesday (25 March) President Thieu ordered his Premier to form a war Cabinet as the face of the fighting in Vietnam changed.
