    THE FRIGATE "PRESIDENT PRETORIUS" WAS COMMISSIONED FOR THE SOUTH AFRICAN NAVY AT A SHIPYARD AT SCOTSTOUN IN GLASGOW TODAY (WEDNESDAY). THE FRIGATE IS THE LAST OF A SERIES OF NAVY VESSELS BUILT ON THE CLYDE FOR THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT.

    THE COMMISSIONING WARRANT WAS READ BY CAPTAIN JOHN JOHNSON WHO WILL COMMAND THE NEW SHIP. AMONG DISTINGUISHED GUESTS AT THE CEREMONY WERE THE CHIEF OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN NAVY, REAR ADMIRAL BIERMAAN, AND THE SOUTH AFRICAN AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED KINGDOM, DOCTOR CARL DE VET.

    THE CEREMONY WAS HIGHLIGHTED BY THE CUTTING OF A CAKE BY THE CAPTAIN'S WIFE - USING HER HUSBAND'S CEREMONIAL SWORD AS CAKE-KNIFE.
