    Two armed Filipino hijackers surrendered on Tuesday evening (25 February) after President Ferdinand Marcos personally intervened with an offer of "conditional pardon".

    The hijackers, Emilio Abarca, 37, and Cesar Palang, 29, surrendered to Defence Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile at Manila airport after an eight-hour drama which began jus after take-off from the southern Philippine city of Pagadian.

    The men, armed with a homemade gun, two hand grenades and an Armalite rifle wrested from a soldier passenger, commandeered a domestic Philippine Airline DC-3 from Pagadian to nearby Zamboanga City with 26 people on board.

    They ordered the pilot to fly to Cebu City in the central Philippines, where they released 12 passengers, and then handed for Manila.

    After three hours of negotiations with officials at Manila airport, hey released the remaining 13 passengers and three crew members, and surrendered to Mr. Enrile.

    The Defence Secretary said that conditional parton from President Marcos was being extended following Abarca's claim that he was convicted on false evidence and that the trial judge was biased. Palang did not make any demands.

    In the meantime, both hijackers were handed over to the national police. Officials said the hijacking of a civilian aircraft would be treated as a separate offence.
