  • Description

Jimmy Connors of the United States retained his Men's Singles title in the South African Open Tennis Championships in Johannesburg on Monday (25 November) with a 7-6,6-3,6-1 victory over fellow American, Arthur Ashe.

The two players met in the final last ear, Connors winning that clash in straight sets.

The 22-year-old Connors produced the superb range of shots which parlier this year gave him the Wimbledon and United States titles.

Ashe, a black American who several years ago was refused an entry visa to South Africa because of his outspoken views on apartheid, told the packed Ellis Park centre court after Monday's match:" I think there is a vast potential for good here. Visits by sportsmen can go a long way to normalising relations between South Africa and the rest of the world."
