    President Duvalier, who as "Papa Doc" ruled the Caribbean dictatorship of Haiti for 14 years, is dead. His son, Jean Claude Duvalier, announced the death today (Thursday) and at once took office as the county's new President for life.

    Jean Claude's appearance, surrounded by a strong bodyguard, on the steps of the palace in Port au Prince at first evoked little response from the crowds massed outside. But armed civilians started cheering and the crowds joined in.

    SYNOPSIS: The iron rule of President Duvalier over the Caribbean dictatorship of Haiti has ended his son Jean Claude, here with a heavy bodyguard outside the palace in Port au Prince, announced the death of "Papa Doc" on Thursday. The nineteen-year-old Jean Claude also announced that he was at once taking office as the country's new President for life. "Papa Doc" had ruled the island republic by a mixture of repression and voodoo magic for fourteen years. The five million people in Haiti are still largely illiterate. Now there's the threat of a new power struggle in the country, with "Papa Doc's" daughter Marie-Denise and her husband regarded as potential challengers to the new rule of Jean Claude Duvalier.
