  • Description

THE TWO AUSTRALIANS, ROD LAVER AND JOHN NEWCOMBE BOTH WON THEIR SINGLES MATCHES AT WIMBLEDON TODAY (TUESDAY). NEWCOMBE DEFEATED THE DUTCHMAN, TOM OKKER, AND LAVER BEAT CLIFF DRYSDALE OF SOUTH AFRICA.

THE MATCH BETWEEN NEWCOMBE AND OKKER WENT TO FOUR SETS AS THE DUTCHMAN FOUGHT DESPERATELY TO STAVE OFF DEFEAT. NEWCOMBE HAD LOST TWICE TO OKKER RECENTLY. OKKER SAVED FOUR MATCH POINTS BEFORE THE POWER OF THE AUSTRALIAN WORE HIS GAME DOWN AND HE LOST. THE SCORES. 8-6, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, REFLECT THE TOUGHNESS OF THE FIGHT. OKKER WAS THE LAST EUROPEAN LEFT IN THE MEN'S SINGLES, AND WAS SEEDED NUMBER THREE.

THE REIGNING CHAMPION, ROD LAVER, HAD SURPRISINGLY EASY WIN OVER THE SOUTH AFRICAN PLAYER CLIFF DRYSDALE IN STRAIGHT SETS. MANY COMMENTATORS HAD PREDICTED A CLOSE GAME BETWEEN THESE TWO, ESPECIALLY IN VIEW OF DRYSDALE'S RECENT FORM. BUT ON THE COURT, THE AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION HAD NO DIFFICULTY IN WINNING 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.
