A ST. LOUIS COUPLE, WHO WERE SUBJECT TO A RECENT SUPREME COURT DECISION, HAVE FORMED?

  • Description

A ST. LOUIS COUPLE, WHO WERE SUBJECT TO A RECENT SUPREME COURT DECISION, HAVE FORMED THE BASIS FOR INTER-RACIAL HOUSING IN A SUBURBAN HOUSING DEVELOPMENT. THE COUPLE, MR. AND MRS. JOSEPH LEE-JONES, TRIED TO BUY A HOUSE IN A NEW ST. LOUIS DEVELOPMENT IN 1964. THE DEVELOPER FRANKLY ADMITTED THAT THE REFUSAL WAS ON RACIAL GROUNDS.

HOWEVER, THE SUPREME COURT HAS NOW UPHELD A LAW WHICH STATES THAT A NEGRO CAN LIVE WHEREVER A WHITE MAN CAN LIVE AND RULED THAT MR. AND MRS. JONES ARE ENTITLED TO BUY THE HOUSE.

THE DEVELOPER PROMPTLY ANNOUNCED "OPEN HOUSING" IN THE SUBDIVISION. HOWEVER, THE COUPLE WHO STARTED IT ALL ARE NOT SURE WHETHER THEY CAN AFFORD TO BUY THE PROPERTY, WHICH HAS INCREASED IN PRICE SINCE THEY FIRST SAW IT.
