  • Description

Soviet chess player Anatoli Karpov, aged 23, was crowned World Chess Champion by the International Chess Federation at a ceremony in Moscow, in the Soviet Union, on Friday (25 April). He gained the title by default from Bobby Fischer of the United States after Fischer failed to agree to defend his title in a proposed multi-million dollar promotion in the Philippines. The American player disputed some of the proposed rules -- insisting on his own rules instead.

The presentation was made in a crowded House of Trade Union hall by Max Euwe, President of the International Chess Federation. The International Federation of Chess Journalists also awarded Karpov with a trophy -- for the best chess player of 1974.
