  • Description

More than 700 delegates, representing 106 developing nations, started a five day conference in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, on Monday (26 January) to discuss the agenda for a forthcoming international ministerial meeting.

The ministerial meeting is due to be held in Manila next week to decide developing countries' views for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to be held in Nairobi, Kenya, in May.

Among the topics to be discussed will be the distribution of commodities, recent trends in international trade and development, money and finance. Also to be discussed will be the transfer of real resources for development and the transfer of technology.

At Monday's conference the Philippine Foreign Secretary, Mr. Carlos Romulo told the diplomatic and economic experts attending the conference that they were participating in an historic event - the first meeting of developing countries for such a purpose in Asia.

Mr. Romulo added that it was appropriate that the Philippines should host the conference since it was a founding member of the United Nations and an original signatory to the U.N. Charter.
