Background: Tests of the vertical and short take-off and landing (V/STOL) XV-6A Aircraft were conducted recently aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence and the dock landing platform USS Raleigh.

Formerly designated P-1127, the British-built fighter can take off straight up from the deck of a carrier or an amphibious assault ship, and fly forward at close to the speed of sound.

The odd looking aircraft, which is 42 feet long and weighs more than 12,000 pounds, can take off vertically and hover by deflecting the exhaust from its jet engine. Small jets in the fuselage and wings help to maintain stability.

During the tests, the XV-6A successfully performed vertical take-offs and landings on the Independence and on the Raleigh. The test aircraft is being jointly evaluated by the United States, United Kingdom and West Germany.
