  • Description

In Lebanon the recent outbreak of fighting between members of the Syrian peace-keeping force and soldiers of the new Lebanon Army has led to increased demands from Christians for the Syrians to leave Lebanon. In a symbolic gesture of protest Christians marched over the Israeli border on Monday (13 February).

SYNOPSIS: The majority of the Christian marchers came from enclaves in southern Lebanon, close to the Israeli border. They crossed the border at Dovev, 30 kilometres west of Metula. The marchers-were protesting against the 30,000 strong Syrian Arab League peace-keeping force which has been in Lebanon since the civil war ended 15 months ago.

Anti-Syrian feeling among the Christian population was fanned recently by a Syrian attack on the headquarters of the National Liberal Party. Fierce fighting followed last week's attempt by the Syrians to move tanks into Ashrafiyeh-in the heart of Christian Beirut. Right-wing sources later reported 100 people killed, prompting a remark by Mr. Camille Chamoun, leader of the National Liberal Party, that the Syrians were more like an army of occupation than a peace-keeping corps.

One of the members, Major Chipyag, outlined the reason for the continued agitation.
