    Delegates to the first Arab Youth Festival being held at Algiers, on Sunday (9 July) planted dozens of young trees around a park that is being dedicated to youth.

    The Festival has attracted about two thousand young people from fifteen Arab countries. It began last Thursday (6 July) and ends on Tuesday (11 July).

    Officially opening the Youth Park in Algiers was M. Abdelah Fedel, the Algerian Minister for Yough and Sport. The park features a monument in the shape of a "J" -- for "Jeunesse", the French word for Youth.

    Earlier, M. Fedal had opened the festival with a speech in which he said it was time to free Arab economics from all foreign dependence.

    The festival features not only sports and cutural events, it also provides an opportunity for the young people to engage in round-table discussion about matters of interest to the Arab World.

    SYNOPSIS: Two thousand young people were in Algiers during the weekend for the First Arab Youth Festival. They came from fifteen countries and on Sunday gathered at a park in the city which the Algerian Government is dedicating to youth.

    The various nationalities parade at the entrance to the park to watch Algeria's Minister for Youth and Sport, M. Fadel, officially open the park. inside the area a monument has been built in the shape of a "J". This stands for "Jeunesse", the French word for youth.

    After the ceremony the various national groups each planted a number of threes around the park. These will commemorate the firs Arab Youth Festival - which lasted six days and also featured sports meetings and cultural events. The young people also had time for round-table discussion on matters of concern to Arab nations.

    Serious matters were forgotten though es the young people celebrated the tree-planting.
