  • Description

The British yacht Kurrewa V--a prospective challenger for the America's Cup--arrived at Newport, Rhode Island, Saturday (1 August) to a gala welcome from local yachting fans.

In fine sailing weather, the Australian-backed Kurrewa was escorted to its berth at the Willams and Manchester shipyard by Britain's Sovereign, against which it will compete for the right to race against the American defender--yet to be chosen.

American and British flags, along with yachting pennats, marked the route of parade honoring the crews of the two yachts. Owen Aisher, representing Kurrewa and J. Anthony Boyden, head of the Sovereign syndicate, each received siler cups from the city of Newport. Both spoke briefly.

When the procession reached Washington Square, where the ceremonies took place, the Newport Artillery Company, in Colonial uniforms, put on a drill and fired a salute.

Kurrewa and Sovereign will engage in a series of trial races over the America's Cup Course off Newport, starting 10 August. The winner of the trials will then be named as the British challenger for the America's Cup. She will face the winner of a series of American trial races between American Eagle, Constellation, Columbia and Nefertiti.
