  • Description

THE FICKLE BRITISH WEATHER SMILED ON THE WEST INDIAN CRICKET TEAM WHEN THEY PLAYED THE FIRST MATCH OF THEIR TOUR AGAINST THE DUKE OF NORFOLK'S XI AT ARUNDEL, SUSSEX TODAY (SATURDAY).

BRIGHT SUNSHINE BATHED THE GROUNDS OF ARUNDEL CASTLE, HOME OF THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF NORFOLK, FOR THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF THE VISITING WEST INDIANS. CONDITIONS SEEMED TO SUIT THEM, FOR AN 11,000 CROWD WAS DELIGHTED WHEN WEST INDIAN CAPTAIN GARY SOBERS CLINCHED A FOUR-WICKET TOURIST VICTORY WITH 20 RUNS IN FOUR STROKES.

THE TWO SIXES AND TWO FOURS FLASHED OFF SOBERS' BAT TO END WHAT HAD BEEN A MATCH FULL OF FINE, ZESTFUL, CALYPSO CRICKET WITH BOTH SIDES TAKING FULL HONOURS. THE DUKE'S XI HAD DECLARED AT 221 FOR SEVEN WICKETS LEAVING THE WEST INDIANS TO MAKE 222 IN 185 MINUTES. THEY ACHIEVED 223 WITH SIX WICKETS DOWN AND HALF AND HOUR TO SPARE.

FOR THE DUKE'S XI KEN BARRINGTON AND TOM GRAVENEY BATTED SKILFULLY ON A SLOW PITCH. BARRINGTON'S 73 TOOK ONLY 75 MINUTES AND INCLUDED TWO SIXES AND NINE FOURS. GRAVENEY MADE A CLASSICAL 58 IN 70 MINUTES.

AFTER THE TOURING SIDE HAD LOST EASTON McMORRIS IN THE OPENING OVER, JOEY CAREW (54) AND ROHAN KANHAI (21) PUT ON 61 FOR THE SECOND WICKET, BUT THE ISSUE WAS VIRTUALLY SETTLED WHEN SEYMOUR NURSE (61) AND PETER LASHLEY (61 NOT OUT) ADDED 98 IN 70 MINUTES FOR THE FOURTH WICKET. IT WAS APPROPRIATE THAT THE COUP DE GRACE WAS DELIVERED BY WEST INDIAN CAPTAIN SOBERS WITH FOUR MAGNIFICENT STROKES FROM THE BOWLING OF UNFORTUNATE OFF-SPINNER MARTIN HORTON.

THE ONE-DAY MATCH AT ARUNDEL, IN ADDITION TO BEING BOTH A SOCIAL AND A CRICKETING OCCASION, PROVIDED SOME USEFUL HINTS FOR THOSE MEMBERS OF THE DUKE'S XI WHO WILL BE FACING THE WEST INDIANS IN THE FIRST OF THE TEST MATCHES IN JUNE.
