    ACCOMPANIED BY THE INDONESIAN FOREIGN MINISTER MR MALI, MR SATO, THE FIRST JAPANESE PREMIER TO VISIT INDONESIA FOR FIVE YEARS, LAID A WREATH AT THE CENOTAPH. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A MINUTE'S SILENCE.

    MR SATO THEN VISITED THE NEARBY GRAVES OF DUTCH AND INDONESIAN SOLDIERS WHO DIED DEFENDING INDONESIA AGAINST THE JAPANESE INVASION IN WORLD WAR TWO. THE JAPANESE PREMIER SPRINKLED FLOWER PETALS ON THE GRAVE OF A CHRISTIAN SOLDIER.

    AFTER THE CEREMONY, MR SATO CALLED ON THE ACTING INDONESIAN PRESIDENT, GENERAL SUHARTO FOR THEIR FIRST ROUND OF TALKS.

    THE TALKS WERE CENTRED ON ASIAN PROBLEMS AND INDONESIA'S REQUEST TO JAPAN FOR ABOUT 100,000,000 YEN AID DURING 1968.

    THE QUESTION OF AID, ACCORDING TO A JAPANESE SPOKESMAN, WAS TO BE DISCUSSED BUT NO DEFINITE FIGURE WILL BE FIXED TILL AFTER THE CONFERENCE ON INDONESIA'S DEBTS IN AMSTERDAM NEXT MONTH.

    MR SATO IS ON A 15-DAY OFFICIAL TOUR OF INDONESIA, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, THE PHILIPPINES AND SOUTH VIETNAM.
