  • Description

THOUSANDS OF PARISIANS RODE TO WORK IN ARMY LORRIES TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AS FRANCE'S SECOND RAILWAYMEN'S STRIKE THIS AUTUMN BROUGHT CHAOS TO THE NATION'S TRANSPORT.

THE 34 HOUR STRIKE, CALLED IN PROTEST AGAINST WAGE RESTRAINT, BEGAN YESTERDAY EVENING. IT IS SCHEDULED TO FINISH AT 0500 G.M.T. TOMORROW.

A FLEET OF 300 ARMY LORRIES STARTED WORK EARLY THIS MORNING OPERATING A SHUTTLE SERVICE BETWEEN PARIS SUBURBS AND CENTRE. FIRST INDICATIONS WERE THAT MANY COMMUTERS WERE RELYING ON PRIVATE CARS RATHER THAN ARMY "BUS SERVICE" OPERATING ON 13 ROUTES. BUT BY MID-MORNING HOUSEWIVES WERE CLIMBING ABOARD FOR THEIR SHOPPING VISITS TO THE CENTRE.

SUBURBAN RAIL TRAFFIC WAS CUT DRASTICALLY BY THE STOPPAGE, BUT ON MAIN LINE ROUTES THE ONE IN THREE TRAINS STILL RUNNING KEPT UP A REDUCED SCHEDULE.

(ABOUT 80,000 OF THE COUNTRY'S 240,000 COAL MINERS ALSO STOPPED FOR 24 HOURS TODAY OVER DISCONTENT WITH THE GOVERNMENT'S WAGES POLICY.)
