    MR. DAVID LAFFERTY, A TWENTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD LONDONER, CLIMBED INTO THE SUNLIGHT YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) AFTER SPENDING MORE THAN FOUR MONTHS IN A CAVE BENEATH THE MENDIP HILLS IN SOUTH WEST ENGLAND TO BECOME THE NEW WORLD RECORD HOLDER FOR UNDERGROUND ENDURANCE.

    LAFFERTY WAS ALONE IN HIS CAVE FOR 130 DAYS... THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 126 DAYS WAS HELD BY A FRENCHMAN. THE NEW WORLD-BEATER WAS ASTONISHED WHEN HE WAS TOLD ON MONDAY (1 AUGUST) THAT HE'D BROKEN THE RECORD. ACCORDING TO HIS CALCULATIONS, IT WAS JULY 17TH.

    AN EXPERIENCED POTHOLER, LAFFERTY TOOK IN THE CHALLENGE AFTER THE OWNER OF THE CAVE OFFERED A PRIZE OF GBP500 STERLING FOR ANYONE WHO SPENT 100 DAYS UNDERGROUND. AND THERE WAS GBP5 MORE FOR EACH FURTHER DAY - MAKING LAFFERTY'S TOTAL GBP650.
