A large communist rocket attack in the vicinity of Phnom Penh's International Airport on Wednesday (10 November) killed at least 19 people....mainly civilians....and wounded another 14. Damage was also caused by mortars and grenades. Seven of the dead were babies. They died after a communist sapper had thrown a grenade into a bunker where many civilians were sheltering. Communications with the rest of the world were disrupted for five hours because of damage to a nearby telecommunications station.
Visnews cameraman Josep Lee was on the scene as soldiers recovered the mutilated bodies of women and children from the area.
SYNOPSIS: At least 19 people...mainly civilians... died in a large pre-down communist rocket attack on the Khmer Republic's main international airport on the outskirts of Phnom Penh on Wednesday.

The area around the airport suffered badly during the attack, which had apparently been aimed at a nearby communications station. Soldiers and helpers worked throughout the early morning the check for survivors and bring out the dead. Seven of the dead were babies....killed after a communist sapper had tossed a grenade into a bunker where families of soldiers guarding the airfield had sought refuge.
Damage had also been done by mortars.
This wounded woman and her baby were found some time after the attack and escorted to a waiting ambulance.
Children watched as the dead were counted and relatives wept.
The attack on he communications station was only partly successful....radio contact with other countries was disrupted for only a few hours.
