  • Description

A Cologne University eights crew was disqualified after crossing the line first in a rowing race on the Suez canal on Christmas Eve.

Its win was declared void after it cut across the bows of Oxford and Harvard, while an Egyptian entry sank in the cold choppy waters.

Seven crews, including some leading University eights from the United States, France, Britain, West Germany and Egypt took part in the 2000-metre race at the canal entrance on Lake Timsaah, Ismailia.

The race got off to a bad start and officials decided that it be re-started.

After the cutting across and sinking incidents, the race finished in chaos, but the crews took it all in good Christmas spirit.

They get a chance of a re-match on the Nile River at Cairo on Boxing Day.

SYNOPSIS: Lake Timsaah, Ismailia, at the entrance of the Suez Canal, and eights crews from the world's leading universities had been invited to take part in a two thousand metre race there on Christmas Eve.

The race wasn't far underway when it was obvious that the crews were out to enjoy themselves in the best Christmas spirit. Cologne University cut across Oxford and Harvard who were fighting it out neck and neck. Meanwhile in their wake an unfortunate Egyptian crew overturned in the cold choppy waters.

The race ended in chaos. The German's crossed the line first but were disqualified. As consolation for some pretty poor performances, the crews get a chance of a re-match on the Nile at Cairo on Boxing Day.
