  • Description

The French horse Youth has won the Washington International horse race run at Laurel in the American state of Maryland.

SYNOPSIS: Before the race there had been some criticism by owners and trainers of the track's water-softened conditions.

The race was worth one hundred thousand dollars (more than GBP 63,000 sterling) to the winning owner. Youth's win was something of a surprise because the three-year-old bay colt accidentally cut his hoof a week before the race and almost didn't make it. Noble Dancer led for the first two thirds of the race before being overtaken by On My Way. Noble Dancer was from Norway - Norway's first entry in the Washington International. It was being ridden by the world famous English jockey, Lester piggott, who said after the race that his horse was just not good enough to win. On My Way - now taking the lead - was from France as was Ivanjica lying third. Ivanjica and Youth started at 9-5 favourites.

Into the final turn, and Youth cuts in front of On My Way with Ivanjica on the rails. Ace Canadian jockey, Sandy Hawley, said that when Youth swerved he grabbed hold to restrain his horse and there was no contact with On My Way.

On My Way jockey, Alfred Gilbert, entered an objection, but after stewards examined films of the race that showed On My Way being hampered while making his finishing run, the way Youth finished left no doubt about who would have won the race in the absence of any interference. Youth by ten lengths to On My Way And ivanjica - all of them French horses.
