    THE DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF THE SEMPOR DAM PROJECT IN CENTRAL JAVA HAS BEEN DETAINED FOR QUESTIONING FOLLOWING LAST WEEK'S DAM BURST IN WHICH AT LEAST 130 PEOPLE DIED. HE WAS DETAINED ON THE ORDERS OF CENTRAL JAVA'S GOVERNOR.

    THE SEMPOR DAM, 2,400 FEET (730 METRES) LONG AND 154 FEET (45 METRES) HIGH, COLLAPSED WITHIN 60 MINUTES ON NOVEMBER 27 AFTER TAKING SEVEN YEARS TO BUILD.

    THE DAM, LINKING TWO STEEP HILLS NEAR GOMBONG, ABOUT FOUR MILES (6K.M.) FROM THE SCENE OF DISASTER AND 25 MILES (40 K.M.) FROM SOUTH JAVA COAST, RELEASED A 150-FOOT WALL OF WATER ONTO THREE VILLAGES, KILLING AT LEAST 130 PEOPLE, INJURING 600 AND DESTROYING 300 HOMES.

    ARMY UNITS, CIVIL DEFENCE VOLUNTEERS, BOY SCOUTS AND VILLAGERS ARE CONTINUING TO DIG FOR MORE DEAD. BULLDOZERS ARE HELPING TO CLEAR SURROUNDING ROADS OF MUD, TIMBER AND OTHER DEBRIS.

    GANGS ARE WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK TO REPAIR THE FRACTURED DJAKARTA-JOGJAKARTA RAILWAY LINE. ITS EMBANKMENT WAS EATEN AWAY BY THE FLOODWATERS.

    THE CENTRAL JAVA GOVERNOR, MAJOR-GENERAL MUNADI, HAS SAID THE DAM BURST MIGHT HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY SABOTAGE.

    THE DAM WAS TO HAVE IRRIGATED VAST PADDY FIELDS IN THE KEBUMEN AREA ON THE SOUTHERN COAST OF CENTRAL JAVA.
