  • Description

MARCEL NAVILLE, PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE RED CROSS, ARRIVED IN LAGOS ON THURSDAY FOR CRUCIAL TALKS WITH NIGERIAN LEADERS ON THE I.C.R.C.'S ROLE IN RELIEF OPERATIONS.

THE MEETINGS FOLLOWED THE SUSPENSION OF RED CROSS ORGANISED MERCY FLIGHTS TO BIAFRA.

THE 49-YEAR-OLD SWISS BANKER ARRIVED IN A RED CROSS C-97 STRATO-FREIGHTER WHICH NORMALLY RAN RELIEF FLIGHTS INTO BIAFRAN TERRITORY FROM NEIGHBOURING DAHOMEY.

AT THE AIRPORT HE TOLD NEWSMEN THAT HE HAD BROUGHT TWO TONS OF MEDICAMENTS, MAINLY VITAMIN PILLS, FOR THE GOVERNMENT AND PEOPLE OF NIGERIA. HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT HE WAS OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE TALKS.

MR NAVILLE WAS MET BY THE FEDERAL COMMISSIONER FOR INFORMATION, CHIEF ANTHONY ENAHORO, AND MR TIMOTHY OMO-BARE, HEAD OF THE NATIONAL REHABILITATION COMMISSION.

LATER HE VISITED MAJOR GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON, HEAD OF THE FEDERAL NIGERIAN MILITARY GOVERNMENT. THE TALKS COVERED THE WAYS AND MEANS OF HANDING OVER THE I.C.R.C'S FUNCTIONS TO THE NIGERIAN COMMISSION OF REHABILITATION.

THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT HAS SAID THAT IT WANTS RELIEF TO BE CO-ORDINATED BY ITS REHABILITATION COMMISSION AND THAT ANY NEW FLOW OF AID TO BIAFRA MUST BE SUBJECT TO FEDERAL INSPECTION.
