  • Description

AN ESTIMATED 13 ARAB CIVIL AIRCRAFT WERE DAMAGED OR DESTROYED IN LAST NIGHT'S (SATURDAY) RAID BY HELICOPTER-BORNE ISRAELI COMMANDOS ON BEIRUT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. THE 45-MINUTE ATTACK ALSO LEFT FUEL TANKS AND OTHER AIRPORT INSTALLATIONS ON FIRE.

THE COMMANDOS AVOIDED NEARBY AIRCRAFT FROM NON-ARAB AIRLINES AND IT WAS OFFICIALLY REPORTED THAT THERE WERE NO CASUALTIES IN THE ASSAULT. THE RAID WAS CARRIED OUT, ISRAELI SPOKESMEN SAID, IN REPRISAL FOR THE ATTACK ON AN ISRAELI EL-AL BOEING 707 ARAB COMMANDOS AT ATHENS AIRPORT LAST THURSDAY (26 DECEMBER).

HARDEST-HIT OF THE ARAB AIRLINES WAS MIDDLE EAST AIRLINES. A SPOKESMAN FOR THE COMPANY SAID TODAY (SUNDAY) THAT IT HAD LOST ONE VC-10, ONE BOEING 707, THREE COMETS, TWO CARAVELLES AND ONE VISCOUNT. THE AIRCRAFT CONSTITUTE ABOUT ONE-HALF OF THE AIRLINE'S FLEET.

THREE OF THE MIDDLE EAST AIRLINER AIRCRAFT WERE WRECKED WHERE THEY WERE PARKED ON THE TARMAC, AND THE OTHERS WERE HIT NEAR THE AIRLINE'S HANGARS.

TWO CORONADO JET AIRCRAFT BELONGING TO LEBANESE INTERNATIONAL AIRWAYS WERE ALSO DAMAGED IN LAST NIGHT'S ATTACK. AT LEAST ONE AIRCRAFT OF TRANS-MEDITERRANEAN WAS ALSO HIT.

BEIRUT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IS ONE OF THE MOST MODERN IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND USED EXTENSIVELY BY MANY INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES, MAKING IT ONE OF THE WORLD'S BUSIEST.

LAST NIGHT'S ATTACK SEVERELY DAMAGED RADAR INSTALLATIONS AND OTHER FACILITIES AT THE AIRPORT. AFTER HAVING BEEN CLOSED FOR SEVERAL HOURS, THE AIRPORT WAS RE-OPENED TO INTERNATIONAL AIR TRAFFIC TODAY.

THE LEBANESE GOVERNMENT TODAY DECIDED TO LODGE A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE RAID WITH THE SECURITY COUNCIL OF THE UNITED NATIONS. THE UNITED STATES, FRANCE AND THE UNITED KINGDOM JOINED WITH ARAB COUNTRIES IN DEPLORING THE ISRAELI ATTACK. THE SOVIET UNION HAS ALSO EXPRESSED ITS CONDEMNATION.

UNITED ARAB AIRLINES AND ROYAL JORDANIAN AIRLINES HAVE OFFERED TO LOAN AIRCRAFT TO MIDDLE EAST AIRLINES TO REPLACE THE AIRCRAFT WRECKED IN THE RAID.
