Background: Britain walked off with the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival last night (Thursday). Veteran film director Joseph Losey -- the man once blacklisted in his native United States -- was there to collect the Grand Prix for his British-made film "The Go-Between". French star Michele Morgan presented the award. Also among the celebrities were Dirk Bogarde and Luchino Visconti, star and director of "Death in Venice" which won a special prize to mark the Festival's 25th anniversary.

SYNOPSIS: French film star Michele Morgan, flanked by Italian director Luchino Visconti and British star Dirk Bogarde arrive for prizegiving at the end of the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday. Visconti's most recent film with Bogarde, "Death in Venice", was later to be awarded a special prize to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the highly reputed French Festival. American films collected two other special awards.

But the climax of the gala prizegiving came when Michele Morgan announced the winner of the Festival Grand Prix. It went to the British-made film "The Go-Between".

Veteran film director Joseph Losey stepped up to collect the award. Losey was once blacklisted in his native United States. But has since carved a new and highly successful career in Britain. His award-winning film is based on a famous novel of English provincial life at the turn of the century.
