  • Description

Mahmoud Riad, Secretary-General of the Arab League, left for Kuwait on Wednesday (21 March) in the wake of the Iraq-Kuwait border clash.

Before leaving Cairo airport, Mr. Riad said that the purpose of his trip was "to solve the dispute in a friendly way."
Iraqi troops were still occupying the Kuwaiti border post of Sameta, seized during Tuesday's (20 March) clashes. Four Kuwaiti border guards were reported wounded, with two Iraqi militiamen killed and several wounded.

In his meeting with Mr. Riad on Thursday (22 March), Kuwait's Foreign Minister, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Saban said his country would not give a single inch of its land or make any bargain to settle the conflict. The kuwaiti government is rejecting all mediation offers until the "invaders" withdraw.

Aside from Mr. Riad, two other envoys -- a special emissary of President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, Dr. Murad Ghaleb, and Syria's Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Abdul Hamid Khaddam -- are also in Kuwait to seek an end to the border tension. They are expected to go on to Baghdad after their talks with the Kuwaiti government.
