  • Description

RESCUE WORKERS HAVE ENLARGED A SMALL HOLE TO THREE MEN TRAPPED NEARLY 400 FEET (120 METRES) UNDERGROUND IN A COAL MINE NEAR HAZLETON, PENNSYLVANIA, SINCE LAST TUESDAY (13 AUGUST). DRILLING THE RESCUE SHAFT BEGAN YESTERDAY (MONDAY), BUT RESCUE EXPERTS SAID IT MIGHT TAKE 72 HOURS BEFORE THE HOLE IS BIG ENOUGH TO BRING THE MEN OUT.

FOOD, LAMPS AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES WERE SENT DOWN A SIX-INCH (12-CM) HOLE BORED EARLIER IN THE HOPE OF LOCATING THE MEN. THE THREE HAD BEEN VIRTUALLY GIVEN UP FOR DEAD WHEN A VOICE CALLED UP THE HOLE LATE ON SUNDAY NIGHT, SAYING: "WE'RE ALL OKAY."
HOWEVER, ONE OF THEM, SEPARATED FROM THE OTHER TWO BY 25 YARDS (23 METRES) OF RUBBLE, IS FEARED INJURED. SPEAKING INTO A MICROPHONE LOWERED DOWN THE HOLE, ONE OF THE MEN SAID THEY HAD KEPT THEMSELVES ALIVE BY DRINKING SULPHUROUS WATER FROM A STREAM RUNNING THROUGH THE MINE. AGES OF THE THREE ARE 58, 52 AND 28.

NOW THERE ARE FURTHER DANGERS. RESCUE WORKERS SAID THAT DRILLING THE ESCAPE HOLE COULD BE PERILOUS, BECAUSE OF THE DANGER OF A FURTHER COLLAPSE WITHIN THE MINE, AND THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE AIR SUPPLY MAY NOT HOLD OUT.
