Background: The Norwegian Red Cross has sent Polish farmers a unique form of aid: a herd of 450 top-grade milk cows. The dairy cattle were transported from Bergen, Norway on a series of 3-hour flights to Warsaw and Cracow where they will be distributed. Individual farmers will no have to pay for the cows but they are required to give away free 1500-litres of milk to the nearest school and to give the first born calf to another farmer. A convoy of AN-12 aircraft from the Polish airline, LOT, handled the flights. The cows were carried in small carts within each plane and showed no ill effects from their travel. After landing, the cows were unloaded and put aboard trucks to be taken to their new owners.
