  • Description

Hundreds of Negroes filed by the body of Dr. Martin Luther King to pay their last respects in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was assassinated on Thursday night (April 4). The 39-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner was cut down by a sniper's bullet while he stood with friends on his motel balcony.

Dr. King was rushed immediately to St. Joseph Hospital. But he died in less than an hour from the bullet wound in his neck despite emergency surgery. His close colleague and friend Dr. Ralph Abernathy was almost speechless with grief when he talked with reporters at the hospital.

Fearing outbreaks of violence, Tennessee Governor Buford Ellington ordered 4000 national guardsmen to Memphis. He also imposed a curfew on the city's 550,000 inhabitants of whom 40 per cent are Negroes.

Sproadic incidents occured in Memphis and other Tennessee cities before guardsmen arrived. Several store windows were broken. Police were stoned while trying to clear people form streets and several garbage fires were started. Memphis has been paralyzed for weeks by a garbage strike.

Dr. King's body was scheduled to be flown from Memphis to his home city of Atlanta, Georgia on Trials.
