  • Description

Leipzig's Spring Trade Fair opened on Saturday (10 march) with hopes that the growing recognition of East Germany by the international community would lead to increased East-West co-operation.

At the official opening ceremony, East Germany's Deputy Premier Garhard Weiss said that prospects of increasing trade with the west were good but that tariff restrictions still posed numerous difficulties.

About 9,250 exhibitors from 61 countries are represented at the fair which has been the traditional market place for East-West trade.

This year, Britain is officially represented by a Government-sponsored stand. Diplomatic links were established with east Germany this year.

The main theme of the fair -- like last year -- is socialist integration in accordance with 15-year programme of COMECON, the East European trading organisation.

Most exhibitors at the week-long show are from Russia and Eastern Europe. The emphasis is on machinery, electronics, and scientific and automation equipment.
