    FEDERAL NIGERIAN TROOPS HAVE CONTROL OF THE KEY TOWN OF PORT HARCOURT, IN BIAFRA, THE BREAKAWAY EASTERN REGION OF NIGERIA, DESPITE SPORADIC SHELLING FROM NEARBY BIAFRAN POSITIONS. FEDERAL TROOPS ALSO HAVE COMMAND OF THE TWO STRATEGIC ROADS LEADING INTO PORT HARCOURT.

    PORT HARCOURT'S VITAL AIRSTRIP WAS UNDAMAGED DESPITE BOMBING RAIDS BY FEDERAL AIRCRAFT BEFORE GROUND TROOPS ENTERED THE CITY LAST FRIDAY. MORE THAN 5,000 FEDERAL TROOPS ARE DEPLOYED IN THE AREA. SOLDIERS HAVE BEEN PATROLLING THE STREETS AND SEARCHING BUILDINGS FOR ISOLATED BIAFRAN SNIPERS STILL IN THE CITY.

    BIAFRAN LEADER LIEUTENANT COLONEL ODUMEGWU OJUKWU HAS ADMITTED THAT THE CAPTURE OF THE VITAL OIL CENTRE COULD BE "THE MOST SERIOUS SETBACK" TO THE BREAKAWAY STATE, BUT HE CLAIMS THE CITY HAS NOT YET BEEN LOST. COLONEL OJUKWU WAS SPEAKING IN OWERRI.

    ALREADY THOUSANDS OF REFUGEES -- MAINLY IBOS -- HAVE STREAMED OUT OF PORT HARCOURT. THE REFUGEES INCLUDE WOMEN, CHILDREN AND OLD AND APPARENTLY ILL PEOPLE. GROUPS OF RED CROSS DOCTORS AND OFFICIALS MOVED AMONG THEM ADMINISTERING TO THEIR NEEDS.
