  • Description

An outbreak of smallpox has struck a huge East Bengali refugee camp near Calcutta - killing, say hospital workers, some 60 people over the last two weeks. Only 60 per cent of the Salt Lake camp's 150,000 refugees have been inoculated against thee disease, but thousands more are now queueing in vaccination centres there.

The infectious diseases hospital in Calcutta has opened two extra wards to cope with the rush of patients. About six people are now dying in hospital every day. The West Bengal authorities are concerned that people suffering from smallpox will return to Bangladesh and spread the epidemic.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, was due to see around the camp during his two-day visit to India which started on Sunday (6 Feb).... but his visit was cancelled.
