  • Description

Delegates from all over the world gathered in Geneva, Switzerland, for the opening of the International Labour Conference, June 1.

It is the 44th session of the Conference, at which world industrial and labour problems are discussed under the auspices of the UN's International Labour Organisation.

The meeting is attended by delegates representing Government, labour and management in the participating countries. Aims of the ILO are to set up labour standards by international conventions, and to assist member Governments in economic development schemes.

Previously, friction has arisen over protests from employers' representatives against the participation of so-called employers' delegates for Communist countries. Britain's former employers' delegate was closely associated with the protest, but this year is replaced by Lord McCorquodale, President of the British Employers Confederation.
