    THE UNITED STATES VICE PRESIDENT, MR. HUBERT HUMPHREY, ON THURSDAY (NOV 2) SAW WAR MEMORIALS IN THE MALAYSIAN CAPITAL, KUALA LUMPUR, WHILE IN PENANG LIGHTNING DEMONSTRATIONS CONTINUED AGAINST HIS VISIT.

    MR. HUMPHREY WAS ACCOMPANIED THROUGHOUT THE DAY BY MANY MALAYSIAN OFFICIALS. FIRST, HE PLACED A WREATH AT THE CENOTAPH, DEDICATED TO THOSE WHO DIED FIGHTING THE JAPANESE IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR. THERE WAS A TWO-MINUTE SILENCE AS THE ROYAL MALAY REGIMENT SOUNDED THE LAST POST.

    THE MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR NATIONAL MONUMENT, MADE OF BRONZE, NEARBY CAUGHT THE EYE OF THE VICE-PRESIDENT. THE FIGURES ARE THOSE OF MALAYSIAN SECURITY FORCES AND COMMONWEALTH TROOPS WHO DIED FIGHTING THE COMMUNIST GUERRILLAS DURING THE COUNTRY'S 12-YEAR EMERGENCY.

    THEN CAME A VISIT TO THE NATIONAL OPERATIONS ROOM, WHERE MR. HUMPHREY WAS MET BY THE DEPUTY PREMIER, TUN ABDUL RAZAK, WHO BRIEFED HIM ON THE COUNTRY'S RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME. THE VICE-PRESIDENT DESCRIBED THE PROGRAMME AS AN EXAMPLE OF EXCELLENT MANAGEMENT AND THE CORRECT UTILISATION OF RESOURCES.

    MEANWHILE, IN PENANG, SNAP DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST HIS VISIT CONTINUED IN THE STREETS. RIOT POLICE WERE CALLED IN TO DISPERSE THE DEMONSTRATORS WHO SPILLED GARBAGE ON THE ROADS. AN EFFIGY OF MR. HUMPHREY, STRUNG ACROSS A ROAD, WAS SET ON FIRE.
