SYNOPSIS: ANTI-APARTHEID DEMONSTRATIONS IN AUSTRALIA SPREAD TO SYDNEY ON TUESDAY, WHEN THE SOUTH AFRICAN TOURISTS PLAYED A LOCAL SIDE:
THE DEMONSTRATORS ON THE HILL KEPT UP A CONSTANT NOISE, BLOWING WHISTLES, SLAMMING BEER CANS AGAINST RUBBISH TINS, AND SHOUTING IN UNISON "GO HOME RACISTS."
MOST OF THE ARRESTS WERE MADE ON THE HILL, AND TOWARDS THE END OF THE GAME POLICE WAGGONS WERE DRIVEN ON TO THE GROUND TO PICK UP THOSE ARRESTED....THE MINISTER OF LANDS, MR. LEWIS, SPEAKING AS MINISTERIAL HEAD OF THE SYDNEY CRICKET GROUND, SAID THAT POLICE HAD SHOWN ADMIRABLE RESTRAINT AND PATIENCE.

THROUGHOUT THE GAME THE DEMONSTRATORS ON THE HILL KEPT UP A CONSTANT CHANT AGAINST THE SOUTH AFRICANS. DURING THE FIRST HALF THE VISITORS WERE RUNNING INTO THE WIND, BUT THEIR GOALKICKING PUT THEM INTO THE LEAD. THE SOUTH AFRICAN FIVE-EIGHT, PIET VISAGIE, SCORED A FIELD GOAL AND TWO PENALTIES.

PLAY WAS HALTED BRIEFLY DURING THE SECOND HALF, WHEN FOUR PEOPLE JUMPED THE FENCE, APPARENTLY FROM THE MEMBERS' RESERVE, WHERE THERE'S NO BARBED WIRE. THE POLICE WERE HOT IN PURSUIT.

THE PROTESTERS WERE CAUGHT AND TAKEN OFF THE GROUND. ONE WAS DRAGGED BY THE HANDS FOR MORE THAT TWO HUNDRED YARDS.

THE ONLY TRY OF THE MATCH CAME JUST BEFORE THE END, WHEN THE SYDNEY HOOKER AND CAPTAIN, PETER JOHNSON, CROSSED THE LINE. THE FINAL SCORE WAS SPRINGBOKS 21, SYDNEY 12....SIX PENALTIES AND A FIELD GOAL TO ONE TRY AND THREE PENALTIES.
