    ABOUT 100,000 PEOPLE LINED THE STREETS OF THE WEST GERMANY CITY OF COLOGNE TODAY (MONDAY) TO WATCH THE "ROSE MONDAY" PROCESSION - PART OF THE FAMOUS ANNUAL COLOGNE CARNIVAL. THE JOSTLING CROWDS INCLUDED HUNDREDS OF TOURISTS AS WELL AS FUN-LOVING GERMANS.

    THE CROWDS TURNED OUT TO WATCH THE PROCESSION INSPITE OF INTERMITTENT RAIN, AND MANY OF THEM CARRIED UMBRELLAS. THE PROCESSION WOUND FOR NEARLY TWO MILES (ABOUT THREE KILOMETRES) AND INCLUDED ABOUT 3,000 PEOPLE IN FANCY DRESS - WALKING, ON FLOAT, AND MARCHING IN BANDS OF MUSICIANS.

    AS USUAL, THERE WAS A STRONG TINGE OF POLITICAL SATIRE TO SEVERAL OF THE FLOATS. WORLD LEADERS SATIRISED INCLUDED PRESIDENT DE GAULLE OF FRANCE AND DR. LUDWIG ERHARD, THE CIGAR-SMOKING WEST GERMAN CHANCELLOR.

    AT THE END OF THE PROCESSION CAME THE MOST HIGHLY DECORATED FLOAT -THAT OF THE "CARNIVAL PRINCE" - WHICH WAS COVERED WITH FLOWERS AND DRAWN BY SIX HORSES. THE "PRINCE" THREW SWEETS TO THE CROWDS.
