Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara said Thursday (6 August) that the U.S. has no information that China assisted in any way in the North Vietnamese attacks on U.S. destroyers.
Although McNamara, in a brief Pentagon news conference, indicated he thought the Southeast Asia crisis had cooled off for the time being, he said he thought China would move combat aircraft into North VietNam. He said he thought North VietNam would want the aircraft there because North Vietnam has no combat aircraft of its own.
However, McNamara stressed there is no indication of any substantial movement of Chinese forces yet into North VietNam, either by land or air.
