SYNOPSIS: Sudan--and the swearing in of General Jaafar El-Nimeiry as the country's first President since it gained its independence from Britain and Egypt in 1956. The ceremony took place on Tuesday in the People's Hall in Khartoum, the country's capital, before an audience of 500 businessmen, Cabinet ministers, and members of the ruling Revolutionary Command Council.

The Command Council Vice-President, Bibaker Awadella, delivered a speech before the oath-taking. General Nimeiry, Head of State and Prime Minister since 1969, was earlier this month voted President in a one-man election, and immediately following the Presidential oath-taking he dissolved the Cabinet and the eight-man Command Council. He has taken all ruling responsibilities himself until a new Cabinet is formed.
