  • Description

THREE HUNDRED WOODEN CROSSES MARKING GRAVES IN A GERMAN WAR CEMETERY AT BOULIGNY, NEAR THE FRENCH GARRISON TOWN OF VERDUN, WERE RIPPED UP YESTERDAY (TUESDAY). THE DISCOVERY WAS MADE BY M. ABEL POIVEY, THE KEEPER OF THE CEMETERY WHERE 1,200 GERMAN TROOPS KILLED IN THE FIRST AND SECOND WORLD WAR ARE BURIED.

EARLY FEARS THAT THE VANDALISM HAD POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS WERE DISCOUNTED WHEN LOCAL POLICE TRACED TWO EIGHT-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN IN BOULIGNY WHO ADMITTED THEY RIPPED UP THE CROSSES - "JUST FOR FUN."
