  • Description

The mass transfer of Turkish Cypriots living in the Greek area of Cyprus began today (9 August) when United Nations peace force troops escorted about 250 villagers to the Turkish occupied north of the island.

It's the first phase of the operation agreed between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders in Vienna last week, when they decided that any of the 9,000 Turkish Cypriots in the Greek controlled southern zone of the island should be allowed to move north if they want to.

Most of the Turks who left their homes today, were from the village of Mari, southwest of Nicosia. Many of them had been living there as refugees for the past ten years because of intercommunal conflict.

When they reach the Turkish controlled zone, via Nicosia, they will be allocated houses belonging to Greek Cypriot refugees who fled before the Turkish invasion of a year ago.
