Background: A conference opened in Algiers on Monday (20 November) at which eminent agricultural, economic and sociological experts from several countries will present papers on the problems of "rural dualism in the Maghreb--North African Countries in the Atlas area and bordering the Mediterranean. The conference will continue until December 7."
"Dualism" is a complex problem in country areas. It involves conflict between old and new, traditional and modern methods of agriculture, organisation and marketing.

Geographical and historical backgrounds will be fully covered at the conference. The initial sessions are examining the background of under-development in the Maghreb, and defining the exact problems there. Then the delegates will consider the use of modern marketing techniques and other facets of agriculture in the area.
