Background: The annual fishing week on the Logone River in Chad started on March 9. The event was delayed this year by a dispute between the villagers of Logone-Gana and Djoufoul who traditionally part in the fishing. Over 500 dug-out canoes compete on Ngarkoula waters, working in teams of two. The fishermen cast their nets and race for the opposite bank. The river is teeming with fish at this time of year, some leap up to two metres (6 1/2 feet) out of the water to avoid being netted. The plentiful catch is either smoked or dried in the sun. Whole families are involved int eh fishing and they camp along the riverbank throughout the week.
