Background: With its membership increased to 11 with the admission of Nigeria, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) opened its 24th conference in Vienna yesterday (Monday). Secretary-General Dr. Nadim Pachachi said that as a result of the admission of Nigeria, OPEC members are now responsible for 85 per cent of total world oil exports.

The main item on the agenda at the conference was expected to be the efforts of OPEC countries to win a share of all aspects of the oil industry -- including the marketing and production processes -- from western oil companies.
