Background: The U.S.S.R. has developed a 100-ton floating crane which is capable of travelling at more than six knots (II.I KM an hour). Previously cranes of this capacity had to be imported by the Soviet Union.

The 100-ton Chernomoretz crane is claimed to be superior to similar cranes produced by other countries. It has two engines, each with a capacity of 450 horse-power and has two vane motors. Besides developing a speed of more than six knots, it can also travel side-ways at one-and-a-half knots (approx 2,74 KM an hour).

The crane is the first of nine floating cranes to be built in the Soviet Union over the next few years. Two of them will be built this year -- the fiftieth anniversary of the Revolution.

With its speed and navigation instruments, the crane is said to be capable of moving 25 miles away from the shore, and it is reported to need only one-third of the crew needed by similar cranes made in other countries. It is also said to be able to lay concrete slabs on the sea bed itself.
